(one last glimpse of Prague pictured)
I’ve mentioned before that I’m going to Panama City and a second country to be determined in February and that I’m traveling with two friends. After a lot of discussion, we decided that we are going to Medellin, Colombia. The three of us are thrilled to be going to Central and South America (I’ve never been to either!). Colombia is such a mystery to us and the three of us all think that makes the trip extra special. I know a few people who have been to Colombia, as do the other ladies, but it isn’t your typical American tourist destination.
First up is Panama City, where seeing part of the Panama Canal is a MUST as is getting some jungle and beach time. We’ll arrive on a Monday night and we’ll probably grab a very late dinner or drink to acquaint ourselves with our area, but I’m not sure about that. One of my friends will be in New Zealand for two weeks before that. So she’s flying from Auckland to Los Angeles to Miami to Panama City and my other friend will be coming from Tampa to Miami and I will join them all in Miami. We are lucky to all be on the same flight from Miami to Panama City.
We have three full days in Panama City and then we depart for Medellin (about an hour flight) around noon on Friday and we stay until Monday night. We then depart Panama City for the United States again early on Tuesday morning. So, we’ll be booking a hotel close to the PTY airport. Note: Panama City has 3 airports.
We’ve booked a bargain rate Airbnb in Medellin that has enough space for the three of us, lovely views, and a doorman. I’ve started to gather information about Medellin and I know the things I want to see and that I want to go on the Pablo Escobar tour. I’ve asked for input from the other two and they seem easy going about what to do (as long as it isn’t too expensive) and so I am just going to suggest a bunch of ideas and then plan accordingly when it is time to book and decide.
The best part of of this trip for me is exploring a new continent and region (Central America) and using some of that Spanish I spent years learning in high school! And, I haven’t traveled with more than one friend since I graduated from college (when there were 4 of us) and so it will be an interesting and fun change and challenge to coordinate and plan for 3 people. I think the key is multiple bedrooms and bathrooms - ha.
This will also be the
third fourth year in a row I’ve booked a winter getaway from Chicago (Los Angeles, Napa and San Francisco two years in a row), which I feel is essential. In 2018, I will be in a different place so it will be very interesting to see how I tackle the winter getaway and where I’ll go.
I welcome any Panama City and Medellin suggestions of see, do, or eat and drink. That’s all for now. :)
